Description
M. Atilius Saranus. 148 BC. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.17 g, 11h). SAR series. Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) to left / The Dioscuri, each holding spear, on horseback riding right. Cf. Crawford 199/1a/214/1c (for obv./rev. types); cf. Sydenham 377/398d (for obv./rev. types); cf. Atilia 1/8 (for obv./rev. types); RBW –; CNR Atilia 9 (same dies). Attractive iridescent tone, scrape and scratches under tone, flan flaws and deposits on reverse, edge test scrape. VF. A hybrid, using the obverse die for Sex. Atilius Saranus and the reverse die for M. Atilius Saranus. Extremely rare.
